Work Underway On New Affordable Housing Project On South Coast

Community leaders gather for grandbreaking for new affordable housing project in Santa Barbara

Work is officially underway on a badly needed new affordable housing project on the South Coast.

The non-profit group People’s Self-Help Housing broke ground Wednesday on Jardin de Las Rosas, a 40 unit affordable housing project at the corner of Haley, and Salsipuedes Streets in Santa Barbara.

One of the big issues was removing dangerous debris on the property, which was used as a dumpsite for debris after Santa Barbara big 1925 earthquake. John Fowler, the President, and CEO of People’s Self Help Housing, says cleanup of the site took about five years.

Fowler says there were a lot of hurdles, but by the late summer of 2017, the homes should be complete. The ten million dollar project is being funded by a combination of grants and loans.
