Longtime UCSB professor Arthur Gossard was saluted at a White House ceremony Thursday for leaders in science and technology, receiving a National Medal of Technology.

Gossard's breakthrough research opened the door to cutting edge technology used in mobile phones, satellites, lasers, and solar cells.  He was one of nearly two dozen researchers from around the nation honored by President Obama.

The medals are the nation’s highest honor for achievement in the fields of science and technology.
