Wife Convicted Of Shooting Death Of Husband In Ventura County

A Ventura County woman has been found guilty of first degree murder in the shooting death of her husband, who was an Olympic medalist.

Jane Laut could face 50 years to life behind bars for the August, 2009 shooting death of Dave Laut. She contended that she was a battered wife, and that she shot him out of fear for her son’s safety.

Laut testified her husband threatened to kill her and her son, and that she shot him during a struggle. Prosecutors contended it was murder, noting she shot him six times.

Dave Laut won a bronze medal in the shot put competition at the 1984 Olympics. He was the athletic director at Hueneme High School.
