More than 30,000 people are expected to attend the Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival this weekend.

Kathi King with the Community Environmental Council that puts on the event says this year’s theme is the 50th anniversary of the Santa Barbara Oil Spill.

"Commemorating that event and also moving forward from it and celebrating how that really spurred the modern environmental movement. And we are still working to find alternatives to oil and the destruction that it can cause in so many ways," she says.

The festival features a 50th Anniversary photographic retrospective of the 1969 oil spill, an Earth Day climate Summit that brings together climate-focused groups to mobilize public action, an eco marketplace featuring educational talks with clean solutions for everyday needs, a zero waste zone where volunteers can sort recycling and compost to divert landfill waste, a green car show showcasing alternative fuel vehicles, as well as a sustainable food court, live music and demonstrations.

The free festival runs Saturday from 11 am to 8 pm and Sunday from 11 am to 6 pm at Alameda Park in Santa Barbara.
