Salud Carbajal Defeats Justin Fareed In Closely Watched Central, South Coast Congressional Race

Left: Justin Fareed, Right: Salud Carbajal

A congressional race which attracted national attention has been settled with a Santa Barbara County supervisor topping a businessman for the post.

Democrat Salud Carbajal topped Justin Fareed by a 54% to 46% margin for the 24th District Congressional seat, which includes Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties, and a small slice of Ventura County.

Carbajal was dominant in Ventura County, where he received 60% of the vote, and Santa Barbara County, where he garnered 57% of the vote.  In San Luis Obispo County, Fareed fared slightly better than Carbajal, with the Republican topping the Democrat by a 51% to 49% margin.

The race gathered widespread attention because it was wide open for the first time in years, with Democratic Congresswoman Lois Capps of Santa Barbara stepping down after nearly two decades in office.
