Coronavirus Turns Annual Outdoor Film Series on South Coast Into Drive-In Event
The coronavirus crisis has disrupted a number of popular summertime community events on the Central and South Coasts. One of them is a free outdoor summer movie series at the Santa Barbara County courthouse.
But, the people who host it have come up with a creative alternative. UC Santa Barbara’s Arts and Lectures is holding its free summer filmfest in a safe, socially distanced way, at a Santa Barbara drive-in.
Caitlin O’Hara, with UCSB’s Arts and Lectures says they feel with everything going on, it’s more important than ever to host a community event like this. "Game On! Grit, Grace & Glory-Movies Under The Stars In Your Cars" features six weeks of inspirational sports related films. The series kicks of Wednesday (7/15) with "A League of Their Own."
The gates open at 7:30 Wednesday nights for the series at Santa Barbara's West Wind Drive-In. It's free, but also first-come, first served. There are food trucks, the snack bar is open, and there is pre-show entertainment.
Other movies in the series include “Field of Dreams," “The Karate Kid,” and “Friday Night Lights." You can find the complete schedule here: artsandlectures.ucsb.edu
