Confirmed Coronavirus Case Numbers Skyrocket On Central Coast, As Prison Reports More Than 500 Cases

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases on the Central and South Coasts jumped by more than 300 yesterday, due to a huge spike in numbers at a federal prison complex.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons reports 541 inmates and 11 staff members at the Lompoc prison complex have tested positive.

That’s nearly half of the inmates at the prison complex.  The bureau is testing 100% of the inmates.  Early this week, it opened an on-site hospital at the complex.

This increase pushes the total number of cases for the Central and South Coasts to just under 1750.  Santa Barbara County has 905 cases, Ventura County has 631, and San Luis Obispo County 211 cases.

A 10th death has also been reported in Santa Barbara County. There have now been 30 in the region, including 19 in Ventura County, ten in Santa Barbara County and one in San Luis Obispo.  Almost all of the deaths involved older adults with preexisting health conditions.
