KCLU won seven Golden Mikes from the Radio and Television News Association of Southern California for excellence in news reporting, more than any other large or small market station.
KCLU News Director Lance Orozco won four Golden Mikes. He won for Best “Live” Coverage of a News Story,” for “Borderline Bar and Grill Attack/Hill and Woolsey Fire,” “Best Radio Sports Reporting” for “Los Angeles Has the Rams and Chargers, but for August Oxnard Has Its Own Pro Football Team,” and “Best Radio Entertainment Reporting” for “Hollywood Comes to the Aid of Kids on the Autism Spectrum.”
KCLU’s Debra Greene also won four Golden Mikes. She won Golden Mikes for “Best Radio Medical And Science Reporting” for “Scientist Develop Smartphone App to Detect Bacterial Infections,” “Best Radio Use Of Sound” for “Make Garbage Fly,” and “Best Radio Light Feature Reporting-Longer Than One Minute” for “Eating Worms to Save the Planet.”
Orozco, Greene, plus KCLU’s Willa Sandmeyer, Dave Meyer, Duncan Lively and Andy Vasoyan shared a Golden Mike for “Best Radio Continuing Coverage” of “Borderline Bar and Grill Attack/Hill and Woolsey Fire.”
The station competes in Division B, for smaller stations with five or less full-time news staff members.
KCLU Morning Anchor Willa Sandmeyer and KCLU’s John Palminteri were finalists for “Best Radio Newscast-Less Than 15 Minutes,” again in Division B, the small station division.
KCLU has won more than 90 Golden Mikes since 2001 for excellence in news reporting.
