Major South Coast School District Offering Lottery System For School Choice

Nowadays, going to school isn’t as simple as finding the nearest junior high.

Last year more than 1400 Ventura Unified School District students submitted online lottery applications for schools other than the one nearest to them, and they did so for a variety of reasons.

“It’s not always about funding," says Marieanne Quiroz, Communications Coordinator with the VUSD. "Sometimess you find people who want a school of choice simply because their cousins are going there and that’s where they’re going to be going after school.”

Quiroz says that their School of Choice lottery is run by a computer randomizer and all students are given equal weight if they apply within the two week application period.

For those who are concerned about getting their applications right, Quiroz adds: "It will all be okay."

The VUSD will host an information night to answer all questions parents and students might have. The info night is Thursday January 16, the day before the lottery opens.
