Community Remembers Montecito Debris Flow Disaster At Two Year Anniversary Event

John Palminteri

Hundreds came out to Westmont College to remember the second anniversary of the Montecito debris flow disaster.

The disaster on January 9, 2018, claimed 23 lives and destroyed more than 150 homes.

23 candles were lit at the front of the stage to remember those lost.

Several speakers talked about healing, comfort, community, and rebuilding.

A unified choir of neighborhood children also performed.

One of the performers, Lauren Cantin, had lost both her father and her brother in the disaster. Cantin sang "You'll Never Walk Alone" at the event.

The event lasted about an hour, and those attending were invited to stick around for soup and dessert and chat with their friends and neighbors.

Andy worked at KCLU from 2016 until 2022.
