Decision On Controversial Hotel Project On South Coast Postponed By City Council

For two year, developer Ed St. George has been going through the process of converting a West Beach lot in Santa Barbara from four apartment units into a three-story hotel.

This week, the Santa Barbara City Council teetered on approval of the plan, which is in an appeal phase after a  planning committee rejected it.

At issue is the size of the building for some, and the need for affordable housing as opposed to a commercial hotel for others.

During the hearing, the owner and supporters said the area was perfect for the hotel, while neighbors and dissenters said the hotel would be too big.

The issue will be taken up again on December 17,  after the plan undergoes possible changes, for what is possibly the final chance for approval.

Andy worked at KCLU from 2016 until 2022.
