Event On South Coast Gives Away School Supplies To Hundreds Of Kids From Low-Income Families

Hundreds of low income kids on the South Coast are getting some help with school Saturday morning, at an event called Tools for School.

The City of Santa Barbara’s Housing authority and its nonprofit affiliate will be giving away backpacks filled with school supplies.

Children from K thru 12th grade will be able to choose their own age-appropriate supply backpack and take it home.

Rob Fredericks, the Executive Director of the Housing Authority, says that the amount of money saved on school supplies can be a game-changer for a low-income family.

“When you’re talking a couple hundred dollars for school supplies for a low income family, that’s the difference between making rent or making rent or paying car insurance," Fredericks says. "It makes a huge positive impact.”

The Tools for School event is scheduled to run Saturday until noon.

Andy worked at KCLU from 2016 until 2022.
