Nonprofit Group Raises $4 Million For Debris Net Installation On South Coast

Now that a nonprofit group has raised $4 million in donations, ring nets will be installed soon in the Montecito Hills.

The nets are expected to hold back debris and rocks during heavy storms while still letting sediment flow through to the ocean.

Pat McElroy with the Partnership for Resilient Communities, along with a large group of supporters, stood alongside a section of ring netting on Monday as he demonstrated the proposed timeline to have nets installed in at least three creek areas by May 15.

McElroy also said that other communities are interested in the project, in addition to the accompanying permitting process and the cost.

The organization says it still needs another million dollars in donations to complete this phase of the project, and is hoping for government grants and other financial help in the future.
