The Senate Committee on Indian Affairs will hold a hearing Wednesday on a bill that would allow the Santa Ynez band of Chumash Indians to increase its tribal land in the Santa Ynez Valley.
The area in question is known as Camp Four off Highway 154 near the 246.
The tribe and some local residents have been at odds over the site.
Senators Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris were asked by a coalition of residents in the valley to have a special hearing on the bill, HR-1491, to look closer at any impacts that the land designation change might have.
The tribe says it has been looking for years at ways to increase housing for its members, and this site would allow it to build 140 homes along with a 1200 square foot community center.
It would then pay the county for any impacts the development had on public safety roads and county services.
