New South Coast Housing Project Raises Concerns About Crosswalk Safety

Over a thousand new rooms are going in around the intersection of Storke Road and El Colegio in Isla Vista where more student housing is going up in the form of high rise buildings.

It's right across the street from adult student housing and the Isla Vista Elementary school, and because many people walk in that area, residents are concerned about pedestrian safety around the busy intersection.

Drawings were up at a town meeting last night with residents looking at a design that uses a pork chop style island for those crossing the street as part of the safety plan.

It was reviewed by UC Santa Barbara and the county transportation leaders.

Some who live and work in the area say however, it will be too risky.

Their concerns were heard at the meeting but for now, no design changes are expected to be made.
