Contentious Bicycle Master Plan Moves Toward Consensus In South Coast Community

After months of strained relationships between city leaders, bike groups, residents and planners, the city of Santa Barbara is now closer to reaching an agreement on a bicycle master plan.

The plan was to establish more defined and marked bike ways in a city known for a high rate of accidents involving bicyclists and vehicles.

Recently, a plan to eliminate parking on a section of Micheltorena Street to clear out asphalt for a bike lane infuriated residents on the western side of downtown.

That option and others were reworked, and Tuesday the city favored a plan for more bike lane improvements on streets including Haley, Cota, Ortega, Modoc, and Las Positas.

Funding of about $12 million may come from a Cal Trans transportation grant.
