Northbound 101 Reopened After Big-Rig Accident

An accident involving a big-rig and other vehicles completely shut down the northbound 101 in Santa Barbara this morning.

The accident, which also involved a fuel spill, occurred at 4:30 this morning near Cabrillo Boulevard in downtown Santa Barbara.

The driver of a northbound combination tractor-trailer lost control and smashed into the guard rail. He was unhurt, but a 300 foot stretch of the rail was damaged.

The closure began at around 5 and traffic was detoured around the crash until the California Highway Patrol could open one of the two northbound lanes at 7:30.

Even after the lanes reopened, traffic continued to crawl through the area at speeds of just 17 miles an hour, with the back up extending for miles to Bailard Avenue in Carpinteria.

Both lanes re-opened to traffic at 8:15 a.m.
