Academy Award Winning Actor George Kennedy, Onetime Ventura County Resident Dies

Actor George Kennedy won an Academy Award for the 1967 hit movie "Cool Hand Luke."

An Academy Award winning actor who was a longtime Ventura County resident has died.

George Kennedy starred in more than 200 movies, and television shows.

In 1967, he won a “Best Supporting Actor” Oscar for his role in “Cool Hand Luke.”

Kennedy was perhaps best known for his role as the can-do aircraft mechanic all four of the “Airport” disaster movies, and as a police captain in the “Naked Gun” crime parody movies.

The actor had a beach house in Oxnard.

Kennedy died Sunday at a care facility in Idaho.  He was 91 years old.
