The state of California has awarded a conservation group $1.2 million to help restore a wildlife preserve in Ventura County.
The Ventura Land Trust is receiving funding from the California Wildlife Conservation Board to restore native habitat and improve the watershed health of the Harmon Canyon Preserve.
The 2,100 acres of land north of Ventura is already designated open space, but parts of the habitat were damaged by agriculture and ranching, which opened the door to invasive plant species. The grant will allow the Land Trust to restore about 45 acres of coastal sage near two miles of popular trails.
The Harmon Canyon Preserve opened to the public in 2020 and includes trails for hiking, running, and non-motorized bike riding.
