Ventura County firefighters are continuing efforts to contain two wildfires in the Santa Clara River Valley.

As of midday Tuesday, containment of the 60-acre Maria Fire is up to 60%. It started Monday afternoon, burning brush in the Santa Clara River bed south of Santa Paula. No structures have been damaged.

Firefighters are also working to contain the Howe Fire, which has been burning since Monday night in the mountains south of Piru. Crews stopped the growth of the 30-acre-plus blaze Monday night, but because of the rugged terrain, containment remains at 0%. About 150 firefighters are battling the fire.

The cause of both fires is under investigation.
