A state senator from the Tri-Counties will become one of the most powerful leaders in the California Legislature.

Democratic Sen. Monique Limon of Santa Barbara will become the next Senate president pro tem in 2026. She served four years in the State Assembly before being elected to the State Senate in 2020. The Democratic Caucus unanimously approved her selection for the post.

Limon chairs the Senate Democratic Caucus and the Senate Banking Committee. Her new title will give her major new clout in state politics.

She represents the 21st Senate District, which includes all of Santa Barbara County and parts of Ventura and San Luis Obispo Counties.
