A law enforcement agency in the Tri-Counties stepped up efforts to get a potentially life-saving treatment for drug overdoses into the hands of the public.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office is now making free Narcan doses available to people at all of its eight stations in the county.

Narcan can be effective in counteracting opioid overdoses. It’s a nasal spray which can be administered to someone who is not breathing, or unconscious due to an overdose.

There’s been a surge on accidental opioid overdose deaths on the Central and South Coasts, as well as around the country. It’s hoped that by having Narcan readily available, some of those deaths can be avoided. People can get doses of the treatment, as well as information on how to use it anonymously from any sheriff’s station during business hours.
