New details released about fatal shooting involving off-duty police officer in Santa Maria

An impromptu memorial has popped up at the Thousand Oaks intersection where a pro-Israeli demonstrator was fatally injured Sunday.

Investigators say a man fatally shot by an off-duty police officer was armed, and shooting at others when he was fatally wounded.

Detectives say man was shooting at a group of people, and towards an occupied restaurant when he was fatally wounded by an officer.

Investigators have released new details about a fatal officer involved shooting on the Central Coast.

It happened March 25, outside of a small market in Santa Maria. Santa Barbara County Sheriff's detectives say there was a confrontation between two groups of people in the parking lot. There was a fight. Investigators say Manuel Reyes Rios pulled out a pistol and started firing, wounding one person.

An off-duty Santa Maria Police officer who was in the store came outside, identified himself, held up his badge, and ordered the 19-year-old to drop his gun. Detectives say Rios failed to comply, and kept shooting at the group, as well as towards an occupied restaurant

The officer opened fire, fatally wounding Rios. No one else was seriously injured. The Sheriff's Office is handing the investigation into the shooting.
