Santa Barbara's Central Library is closed through April 4 as part of a major construction project.

Santa Barbara's Central Library closed to public March 31-April 4.

What's normally one of the busiest libraries in the Tri-Counties is closed due to a construction project which includes the removal of some toxic substances.

The Santa Barbara Central Library is undergoing renovations which include the addition of a new elevator, and the remodeling of its lower level.

The project includes the removal of some asbestos, which is a known cancer-causing substance. So as a precaution, the library is closed to the public through April 4.

Due dates for items which have been checked out have been extended, and people will have additional time to pick up things on hold. But, all materials at the library will be inaccessible to the public during this part of the construction project.
