A traffic collision on the Central Coast sent two responding firefighters to hospitals, after they were hit by a passing vehicle.

The firefighters were struck by a passing van.

Two firefighters were among eight people hurt in a pair of traffic accidents on Highway 101 in Santa Barbara County.

A vehicle went off the highway, and crashed at around 5 a.m. Wednesday near the Highway 101-Highway 1 interchange in the Gaviota area.

After first responders arrived at the scene, a passing van hit two firefighters. One of them is reported to be in stable condition in the intensive care unit of a hospital, while the other was treated and released. Six other people suffered minor to moderate injuries from the collisions.

The accidents shut down the southbound 101 for more than six hours between the Buellton and Gaviota areas. It reopened at about 12:30 p.m.
