It was a spectacular sight.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket took off from the Central Coast Friday afternoon, lifting 52 small communications satellites into orbit.

The 12:26 p.m. launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base was visible throughout the region. The reusable first stage booster successfully landed on a barge in the ocean off of Baja California.

The launch was one in a series to add to a orbital network of small communications satellites to improve internet service to underserved parts of the world.
