The action allows hard hit individuals and businesses to seek FEMA aid.

The President added Ventura County to a list of California counties eligible for federal aid in the wake of the huge January 9 storm.

The federal disaster declaration opens the door for individuals, and businesses to apply for aid through FEMA. The assistance can include things like rental payments for temporary housing, grants for home repairs, low-interest loans for losses not covered by insurance, as well as crisis counseling for those who need it.

Democratic Congressman Salud Carbajal of Santa Barbara spearheaded the effort to get the disaster declaration clearing the way for federal aid.

Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties have had the federal designations in place for weeks, with some residents already filing requests for assistance.
