A sewage spill triggered by this month's big storm led to a closure at a popular Santa Barbara beach.

Big January storm blamed for causing sewage line rupture.

A section of a popular Santa Barbara County beach is closed due to a sewage spill.

A part of Santa Barbara’s East Beach has been shut down due to the spill into Sycamore Creek. Santa Barbara officials say a sewage line spanning the creek at East Mason Street broke. An estimated 5500 gallons of sewage spilled into the creek.

The creek flows into the ocean near the East Beach volleyball courts. Signs have been posted on the beach telling people to stay out of water in the vicinity of the outfall, because of the bacteria from the spill.

The damaged pipe has been repaired. It’s believed the storm earlier this month led to the break.
