Main Oxnard Post office to be renamed after John Hatcher III

A post office in Ventura County is being renamed after a longtime community leader and civil rights activist in the region, thanks to the efforts of a local congresswoman.

The main U.S. Post Office in Oxnard will be renamed the “John R. Hatcher III Post Office Building.”

Hatcher was the son of a civil rights leader in Alabama born during the start of the civil rights era. He followed in his father’s footsteps. The late civil rights leader was a member of the NAACP for more than 60 years, and served for some four decades as president of the Ventura County chapter. He was an Air Force veteran who had a long career working as a civilian for the Navy.

On Tuesday, President Biden signed the post office name change legislation authored by Democratic Congresswoman Julia Brownley of Westlake Village.
