Dangerous wind conditions increasing wildfire danger for parts of the Tri-Counties

Strong Santa Ana winds propelled the December, 2017 Thomas wildfire in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties. Concern is high over the brush fire potential for the region this week because of strong winds.

Strongest wind expected Wednesday, with Ventura and Los Angeles Counties going to experience the strongest gusts.

Parts of the Tri-Counties could see some dangerous wind conditions, and increased brush fire danger now into Thursday.

The National Weather Service is calling it a “significant” wind event with the strongest wind predicted for Ventura and Los Angeles Counties.

There could be widespread wind in the 30 to 45 mile an hour range, with gusts up to around 60 miles an hour.

Captain Steve Kaufman, with the Ventura County Fire Department, says the recent rainfall is helping, but not enough. He says after about seven years of drought, fuels remain bone dry. The department has added extra equipment and staffing to deal with potential fires.

The Red Flag warning for Ventura and Los Angeles Counties is in place from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Wednesday, with the strongest wind expected during the morning hours. The wind isn’t expected to reach Red Flag levels in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties. The conditions are expected to ease as we move into Thursday morning.

There is the potential for a second Santa Ana wind event on Saturday.

There are also dangerous wind and wave conditions for boaters along our coastline, with 25 to 35 knot winds, and three to five foot waves.
