Big year for San Luis Obispo County's agricultural industry, with 2021 crop value crossing $1 billion

KCLU
Strawberries remained San Luis Obispo County's top crop in 2021.

Only second time in history that the county tops billion dollar mark: strawberries remain top crop.

San Luis Obispo County had a banner year for agriculture in 2021, according to the county’s just released annual crop report.

The total crop value was $1.08 billion, only the second time the county topped the billion dollar mark.

Strawberries remain the county’s top crop, at $320 million. Wine grapes, avocados, broccoli, and cattle rounded out the top five spots. But, cattle and field crops struggled as a result of the drought. The value of field crops dropped by 26% in 2021.

San Luis Obispo County was the last of the three counties in the Tri-Counties to issue its annual ag report. Ventura County’s crop value last year was $2.08 billion, while Santa Barbara County hit $1.9 billion.
