Fight following dispute at South Coast soccer match leaves one man critically injured

One suspect in the Oxnard fight was arrested, with others still sought.

A Ventura County man was seriously injured in a fight involving members of two adult soccer teams over a controversial play call.

It happened Sunday morning, in Oxnard. The teams were playing at Oxnard High School when there was disagreement over a referee’s decision. It led to a massive fight.

Oxnard Police detectives say one of the players was attacked by multiple people. When first responders reached the scene, Misael Sanchez wasn’t breathing. The 29-year-old Oxnard man was taken to a hospital, where he’s listed in critical condition.

Detectives say witnesses helped identify one of the suspects in the attack. Berlin Melgara was arrested on an assault charge. Investigators are trying to find additional witnesses, and possible video of the fight which could lead to more arrests.
