Program begins this week at County's Northern Branch Jail.

Tattoos can be art. But, for gang members in jail, their gang-related tattoos can sometimes hinder their efforts to get jobs after being released.

This week, Santa Barbara County’s Northern Branch Jail launched a voluntary tattoo removal program for inmates.

Inmates can receive the service free of charge as long as they are participating in rehabilitation programs, and have no current discipline issues. Two people have been trained to use a laser tattoo removal machine.

The goal is to help eliminate barriers which might hamper inmates return to society.
