New COVID-19 surge in Santa Barbara County jails continues to grow in size

KCLU
37 COVID-19 cases have been reported at the Main Santa Barbara County Jail as a result of the latest outbreak.

Visitations suspended as safety precaution due to latest outbreaks at the Santa Barbara and Santa Maria facilities.

The latest COVID-19 outbreak in Santa Barbara County’s jails continues to grow in size.

37 inmates have now been diagnosed with the coronavirus in connection with the latest wave of the virus at the Main Santa Barbara County jail. The new outbreak was discovered in late May.

There are 14 identified cases at the Northern Branch Jail in Santa Maria. Most of the 51 cases at both facilities were asymptomatic, and only one required hospitalization.

As a result of the outbreaks, visitation has been suspended at both county jail facilities. Some court appearances have also been changed to try to prevent the further spread of the virus among inmates.
