It’s stunning news. Ventura County’s top non-elected official, its CEO, has unexpectedly announced his retirement.
Mike Powers has been County Executive Officer for more than ten years, and been with the county for more than 30.
A short statement released by the county says he is leaving immediately, to spend more time with his family.
Powers has won high praise from County Supervisors for his leadership, especially for helping to keep the county on solid financial footing during the pandemic.
Last July, they renewed his contract for five more years, through July of 2026. The statement says County Supervisors will soon begin the process of finding a new CEO. They are expected to appoint an interim CEO at their March 22 meeting.
