Wednesday afternoon launch visible on Central, South Coasts; booster successfully lands back at Vandenberg Space Force Base after finishing mission.

A spy satellite was successful launched from the Central Coast Wednesday afternoon.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from Vandenberg Space Force Base at 12:27 p.m. It was visible throughout much of the region.

The launch was the first of the year for SpaceX from Vandenberg. The company used a brand new booster which successfully landed back at the base after completing its part of the mission.

The rocket was carrying a classified payload for the National Reconnaissance Office.
