A South Coast botanic garden has announced a major expansion project, one focused on younger visitors.

The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden is adding a four acre “Backcountry” garden west of Mission Creek that’s specifically aimed at kids. It will include 10 unique interactive areas.

The activities aimed at five to 13-year-old kids will include things like climbing over logs, navigating a maze, and fossil hunting. The Botanic Garden will have what it’s calling “Backcountry Rangers” to help guide kids through the experience.

The $4 million project is set to open in June of 2022. It will add to the more than five miles of trails in the 78 acre garden.
