More than 200 inmates at Santa Barbara County's Main Jail test positive for virus during last month.

The most recent COVID-19 outbreak at a South Coast jail continues to grow in size.

An additional 26 cases have been identified in connection with a December outbreak at Santa Barbara County’s Main Jail. It brings the total in the last month at the jail to 208 cases.

The outbreak started in a dorm-like area of the jail that housed around 50 inmates. More than two-thirds of those testing positive for the virus haven’t shown any symptoms. Only one of the 208 inmates required hospitalization.

The jail isolates, and tests new inmates arriving at the jail to try to prevent outbreaks. And, an incentive program offering inmates who get vaccinated credits at the jail commissary, prompted nearly 150 of them to get shots recently.
