Five inmates at main Santa Barbara County test postive, but dozens more exposed.

There’s a new COVID-19 outbreak at a South Coast jail.

Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s deputies say an inmate at the main jail facility in Santa Barbara tested positive for the virus Wednesday. The inmate was housed in a dorm-style area with 50 other inmates.

Four of them have tested positive. And, to make it more complicated, the infected inmate also went to an in-person court appearance recently, where he came in contact with inmates from other parts of the jail complex.

The jail launched a new testing program, and has isolated the five known infected inmates. The jail’s staff undergoes regular testing.
