A Santa Barbara man is being held by authorities after his young children were found murdered in Mexico.

A two-year-old boy and 10-month-old girl were found stabbed to death.

Prosecutors in Mexico say a Santa Barbara man has been arrested for the stabbing deaths of his children in Mexico.

Mexican officials say Matthew Taylor Coleman checked into a Rosarito hotel on Saturday with his two-year-old son and 10-month-old daughter. Santa Barbara Police say Coleman’s wife reported them missing on Sunday.

Prosecutors say Coleman left the hotel early Monday morning with his kids and returned a few hours later without them. Later Monday morning, a farmworker discovered the bodies of the children off of a road between Ensenada and Tijuana.

They say both children had been stabbed multiple times. Authorities alerted U.S. Border Patrol agents who arrested him at the San Ysidro border crossing. The 40-year-old man operated a surf school in Santa Barbara.
