Detectives are now identifying a former music teacher as a suspect in a string of sexual assaults at a private school on the South Coast.

Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s detectives say they are investigating Da’Jon James in connection with several sexual assaults reported at Cate School. They initially didn’t identify the suspect, saying they were trying to protect the integrity of their case as they were gathering evidence.

Detectives say they launched an investigation in April after learning about possible abuse. Since then, they say they’ve identified several current and former students from the Carpinteria school who were victims.

James was fired by Cate School in 2020. He was later hired by a private school in Colorado. The 27-year-old man was arrested last month on charges he sexually abused some students at that school in the City of Boulder.
