Major traffic delays for hours in Agoura Hills area Thursday night, Friday morning

Authorities have released more details about the discovery of a small explosive device which closed Highway 101 in the Conejo Valley for about five hours overnight Thursday.

An off-duty Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy driving east on the 101 just after 9 last night saw a small explosion near the Chesebro freeway overpass. Other people reported seeing fireworks in the area.

The deputy got off the freeway, and drove onto the overpass, discovering what appeared to be a suspicious device. Highway 101 was closed in both directions, resulting in major delays for motorists.

A bomb squad was called out, and they destroyed the device. No one was hurt. The freeway was reopened at around 2 a.m. Friday.
