More than 12,000 students set to graduate from Central, South Coast universities this week

Oprah, NFL Legend John Madden among headliners at commencement ceremonies

Commencement speakers range from Oprah to football legend John Madden as more than 12,000 college students on the Central and South Coasts receive their degrees this week.

UC Santa Barbara is doing an online ceremony for more than 6800 students Saturday. Oprah Winfrey will do a live stream graduation address. While the ceremony will be virtual, UCSB graduates who signed up are doing photo ops on a stage in front of the campus lagoon this week.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo is holding three days of events for its 5300 graduates. Former NFL coach and TV sportscaster John Madden will receive an honorary doctorate. He’s a Cal Poly graduate.

Cal Poly will do a virtual ceremony Friday, and award diplomas in person during a series of ceremonies Saturday and Sunday.
