Someone on the Central Coast is among the first winners of California’s new lottery intended to encourage people who haven’t been vaccinated against COVID-19 to get a shot.
Governor Gavin Newsom drew the first 15 winners in California’s “Vax For The Win” event, including one from San Luis Obispo County. 15 people won $50,000 each. The names of the winners haven’t been released, but the state announced the counties where the winners are from.
Everyone over the age of 12 who lives in the state and has been vaccinated has been automatically entered. The only exception is those in prison.
The state is trying to encourage people who haven’t gotten shots to do it now. 67% of the adult residents of the state have received at least one shot, but the goal is to get it to 75% by June 15th. That’s when the state is lifting most of its remaining COVID-19 safety restrictions.
Next week, there will be another drawing with 15 $50,000 winners. And, on June 15th, the state will award its grand prizes, $1.5 million dollars each to 15 vaccinated people.
Even if you don’t win one of the big prizes, everyone who gets vaccinated between now and the 15th will receive a $50 gift card.
