It was a tough day for a Central Coast community, as it said goodbye to a fallen police officer.

San Luis Obispo Police Detective Luca Benedetti died May 10th, when a burglary suspect opened fire on a group of officers serving a search warrant at the man’s apartment. Police say the gunman killed himself shortly after the confrontation.

A huge crowd was on hand Thursday for a memorial service at Cal Poly’s Performing Arts Center. San Luis Obispo Police Sergeant Caleb Kemp was a longtime friend of the 37-year-old officer. He says Benedetti loved his family, but was also passionate about keeping the community safe.

Benedetti was a police officer for more than a decade with the Atascadero and San Luis Obispo Police Departments. He’s survived by his wife, and two children.
