Detectives Say Seven Month Old Central Coast Girl Dies After Drug Exposure; Parents Arrested

Charged with willful cruelty of a child with possible injury or death

The parents of a seven month old Central Coast child who died in what authorities call a child abuse and neglect case have been arrested.

In February, the little girl was airlifted from the Heritage Ranch area near Lake Nacimiento because she wasn’t breathing. She was first taken to a local hospital, and then a Bay Area children’s hospital where she died.

San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s detectives say tests showed the infant had been exposed to fentanyl and methamphetamine.

Following a three month investigation, they arrested Shawn and Kayla Ann Luhm for willful cruelty to a child with possible injury or death. Detectives say while their daughter was being treated in the Bay Area, they tried to get drugs from the hospital. They also arrested Melissa Curry of Atascadero as an accessory to the crime.
