Community Showing Support For Family Of Central Coast Police Officer Who Died In The Line Of Duty

GoFundMe account set up for family

Central Coast residents are rallying to show support for the family of a police detective who was shot, and killed as officers served a search warrant at the home of a burglary suspect.

People have been putting up blue ribbons on poles, and trees around San Luis Obispo to honor San Luis Obispo Police Detective Luca Benedetti. And, the San Luis Obispo Police Department’s Officers Association, and the San Luis Obispo Regional SWAT team set up a GoFundMe account to help the Benedetti family. In less than 24 hours, the fund had already received nearly $200,000 in donations from more than 1400 people. The 37-year-old officer is survived by his wife, and two children.

He died Monday night as a team of officers was serving the search warrant at a San Luis Obispo apartment. Detective Steve Orozco was wounded, but is expected to fully recover. The suspect in the shooting was wounded in return fire by the officers, and investigators say he killed himself.
