Some streets to get sidewalks for first time

A South Coast community is going to get some huge pedestrian safety improvements for schoolkids, and the public in general thanks to a six million dollar government grant.

The project is intended to enhance safety in the Ventura County community of El Rio. Some streets will get crosswalks for the first time.

The state and federal grant money will fund the construction of more than two miles of sidewalks, crosswalk improvements, and the addition of some flashing lights to help insure safe pedestrian crossings.

Plans call for the Ventura County Public Works Agency to start design work next year, with construction getting underway in 2024.
