Contagion! “Bubonic Plague in 19th Century China”
The COVID-19 pandemic renewed interest in the global history of infectious diseases. This year’s History Lecture Series presented by History Department faculty and other experts focuses on different periods in world history when societies faced pandemics and their consequences.
In the third lecture, associate professor of history David Nelson, Ph.D., will address the 19th century outbreak of bubonic plague in China and its eventual global spread that led to the development of bacteriology in the 20th century.
Admission is free, but registration is required at bit.ly/3j2S2oh. The series is sponsored by Cal Lutheran, the Thousand Oaks Grant R. Brimhall Library and Ventura County Library, and funded in part by a Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation grant.
For information, contact David Nelson at dnelson@callutheran.edu.
Please visit callutheran.edu/events before attending to verify details because event information may change. Please check callutheran.edu/visitors for the latest visitor policies before visiting campus.

ALEICHEM SHOLOM! The Wit and Wisdom of Sholom Aleichem – It’s Unanimous! It’s Brilliant! And it’s Back In-Person!
This joyous and poignant musical follows the beloved Yiddish story-teller and his mespoche, as he spins tales of his loves and losses, his fame and his failures, his travels, his travails and the tremendous optimism that kept him going against all odds.
Based on Sholom Aleichem’s letters and tales, the controversy surrounding his stories and plays, and his passionate involvement in the creation of a new homeland coupled with the personal recollections of those who knew him first hand, Aleichem Sholom is written by the internationally acclaimed team of Chris DeCarlo and Evelyn Rudie, with lilting songs by Emery Bernauer, E. Rudie and Sholom Aleichem himself.
The musical stars veteran performer Chris DeCarlo, who once again assays the role of the beloved author, a characterization which has been enjoyed by more than a quarter of a million audience members, and Evelyn Rudie, who has created and portrayed more than three dozen Sholom Aleichem characters in over 2,000 performances to date.
Aleichem Sholom is presented by the Santa Monica Playhouse Jewish Heritage Project, supporting productions that keep the unique richness of Jewish theatre alive.
‘Sholom Aleichem’ means ‘Hello, peace be with you.’ For Santa Monica Playhouse it means ‘richness in Jewish theatre for the community to enjoy.’
Santa Monica Playhouse is supported in part by grants from the City of Santa Monica and the Santa Monica Arts Commission, the Ahmanson Foundation, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture and Playhouse PALS.
