  • Meet Me at the Museum: Community Portraits by Star Montana is a free, two-day event in celebration of the farmworker and migrant communities that make up the Central Coast region of California. Join Los Angeles-based artist Star Montana to participate in representing the beauty and diversity of our community in celebration of the people who sustain us all. Photography is sacred, and everyone deserves a beautiful portrait with their family, friends, pets, or by themselves.

    Participants will receive one free 4 x 6 inch (10 x 15 cm) printed photograph per session, and an optional digital copy to an email address provided at the event. The photograph will be available the same day, after a wait time of up to 30 minutes. All participant information is confidential. Photography will remain private unless the participant agrees to share their image publicly. Hosted at the Art, Design & Architecture Museum at UC Santa Barbara, this event is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Mexican Prints: The Garcia-Correa Collection, on view at the AD&A Museum until December 7, 2025.

    Star Montana is a photo-based artist who lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. She was born and raised in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of East Los Angeles, which is predominantly Mexican American and serves as the backdrop to much of her work. Her work has recently been exhibited at Charlie James Gallery (2019, 2016); Residency Art Gallery (2018); LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes (2018); Occidental College (2017); The Mexican Center for Culture and Cinematic Arts at the Mexican Consulate General of Mexico (2017); The Main Museum (2017); Ballroom Marfa (2017); and Vincent Price Art Museum (2016). She holds a Master of Fine Arts in Art from the University of Southern California, a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from the School of Visual Arts, and an Associate of Arts in Photography from East Los Angeles College

    I will share the tips, tricks and lessons I learned working for 25 years in animation - beginning as an assistant animator at Walt Disney Feature Animation. I returned to Portrait Painting after working as a supervising director at Netflix.

    I will cover; Goals, State of Mind, Breaking Old Habits, Quick Sketch, Line, Rhythm, Form, and Draped Fabric.

    I will lecture, demonstrate and will work with you one-on-one.

    This is a drawing workshop, but bring the materials you are comfortable working with - except no oil paints.
    Bring an easel if you prefer.

    If you are a beginner, Welcome! As for drawing supplies, keep it simple and inexpensive. All of these supplies can be purchased at Art Essentials, 1207 State Street, downtown Santa Barbara. You will need;

    Newsprint Paper Pad 18"X24", 50 Sheets
    A Sketch Board with clips 19"x25"
    Charcoal Pencils for drawing, traditional wood - medium hardness
    A pencils sharpener, or knife to whittle down the end of the wood pencil
    Or Peel & Sketch Charcoal Pencils - medium hardness
    Or Charcoal Sticks - Medium hardness
    Or Conté à Paris Crayons
    You will NOT need, Erasers, Chamois, Blending Stumps, or sand paper.
    We will supply the Costumed Model, Chairs and Water to Drink.

    The room will open at 9:30 am, please be early to set-up by 10 am.

    A portion of the payment will go to support Santa Barbara Visual Artists.

    After his first trip to the Carrizo Plain National Monument, he never envisioned a photo book of these stunning grasslands 15 years later. His book now includes a collection of images from the last of California’s grasslands, time spent in the field chasing light, patiently waiting for wildlife to emerge, and anticipating the next Super Bloom. About the Author In his upcoming presentation and book signing in the Blaksley Library at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, Graham will share his experiences photographing the wild landscape, native flora and fauna of the Carrizo Plain over the past 15 years. His work has appeared in National Geographic for Kids, National Geographic Books, Natural History, Backpacker, Men's Journal, American Forests, Westways, and the BBC Wildlife Magazine. He lives locally in Carpinteria and writes for the Montecito Journal, Coastal View, and the Independent.
  • Join SLOMA on December 12 from 3 to 5 PM for the public premiere of, "Celebrating Our LGBTQI+ Elders: Stories from the Central Coast" presented by the Central Coast Queer Archive Project. For nearly two years, this collaborative and community-based oral history project has been pairing student and youth interviewers with senior members of the queer community, and has yielded an inspiring intergenerational portrait of the LGBTQI+ experience on the Central Coast. The event will begin with a panel discussion from the project participants paired with selected video clips from the archive followed by a Q+A with the audience. Admission is free and wine and light refreshments will be provided. Following the presentation, an informal dinner gathering will be held from 6 to 8 PM at Taco Temple, 1575 Calle Joaquin, San Luis Obispo. Seating is limited to COVID restrictions, so please RSVP to sloqueerarchive@gmail.com by December 5.
